Fifty-one per cent of households in Greater Kumasi in the Ashanti region do not have access to improve toilet facilities. The Project Coordinator for the Greater Kumasi Sanitation and Water Project, George Asiedu said, the figure was arrived at after assessment was conducted. Speaking in an interview with Kumasi FM's Elisha Adarkwah on the sidelines of media orientation on the Greater Kumasi Sanitation and Water Project organised by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources in Kumasi, he said, most of the people in the houses without toilet facilities resort to the use of public toilet facilities. While describing the situation as unfortunate, he said the government is supporting the provision of household toilet facilities in the Greater Kumasi. Mr Asiedu revealed that, government has targeted to build about 30,000 households toilet facilities by 2024 at a subsidized cost. He said the government will take 70 per cent of the toilet facility cost while the households pay the rest. The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, said the government has secured $50 million for the Greater Kumasi Sanitation and Water project. She appealed to residents in Greater Kumasi who do not have toilet facilities in their houses to get involved in the project.
