Attorney-General Dr Dominic Ayine has confirmed that charges against Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and his company, Akonta Mining, have been finalized and signed.
Mr Boasiako has been directed to appear in Accra on Monday, October 6, 2025, for the charges to be read. Dr Ayine warned that failure to comply would result in his arrest.
“The charges against Wontumi, Akonta Mining, have been signed. He should be here on Monday. If he doesn’t come, I will order his arrest,” the Attorney-General said during President Mahama’s engagement with civil society on illegal mining.
The move follows investigations into Akonta Mining’s activities by the CID, whose Director-General, DCOP Lydia Donkor, confirmed that the probe remains active. One other person connected to the company has also been arrested.
Wontumi, who first appeared before the CID in May 2025 with his lawyers, including former Attorney-General Godfred Dame, has denied involvement in illegal mining, insisting Akonta Mining operates legally.
“I am not into galamsey… All my documents are available,” he said on Wontumi TV, pledging full cooperation with investigators.
