The Eco-Conscious Citizens environmental group says, it aims to raise the temperature on the fight against galamsey with the #RedeemYourPresidency Anti-Galamsey on Saturday November 23 2024.
In a statement, the group said, following its Wednesday's Achimota Speaks discussion on galamsey, it was suggested that, although the media has done a brilliant job on covering galamsey, the temperature had cooled.
It therefore aims to ignite the discussion with a confab, which is a hybrid event of talks, screenings and a mini-concert. It will take place at KB Asante Memorial Park, Nmai Dzorn in Accra and via a Zoom webinar.
"This free event is an opportunity, ahead of the general election, to bring the issue of galamsey and illegal mining to the attention of the citizenry and persons seeking political office as parliamentary or presidential candidates", the statement said.
Below is the full statement.
Eco-Conscious Citizens Aims To Re-Ignite The Galamsey Discourse With The #RedeemYourPresidency Anti-Galamsey Confab Of Talks, Screenings And Mini-Concert
At Wednesday's Achimota Speaks discussion on galamsey, it was suggested that, although the media has done a brilliant job on covering galamsey, the temperature had cooled. The Eco-Conscious Citizens environmental group aims to raise the temperature with The #RedeemYourPresidency Anti-Galamsey on Saturday November 23 2024.
The confab, which is a hybrid event of talks, screenings and a mini-concert, takes place at KB Asante Memorial Park, Nmai Dzorn in Accra and via a Zoom webinar.
This free event is an opportunity, ahead of the general election, to bring the issue of galamsey and illegal mining to the attention of the citizenry and persons seeking political office as parliamentary or presidential candidates.
The event's headline title #RedeemYourPresidency is inspired by the pledge made by President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2017 to put his presidency on the line and deal with the illegal mining menace.
The aim is that a) as late as it is, the President uses his executive powers to meaningfully combat the illegal mining menace and to some extent redeem his presidency, and b) for all persons seeking political office to unequivocally declare their positions on dealing with illegal mining, by pledging ahead of the elections their support for the Eco-Conscious Citizens Environmental Demands*.
The event will consist of contributions by environmentalists, scientists and academics, plus highlighting the Eco-Conscious Citizens Environmental Demands; a mini-concert featuring musical performances by Ha Manye, Zakisha Brown, Bibiduro Kakraba Wulipan, Osagyefo, and Nene Narh; screening of excerpts of musical and documentary videos that speak to the subject of galamsey, plus the screening of the Poisoned For Gold documentary and a post-screening discussion on some of the issues highlighted in the video. *Eco-Conscious Citizens Demands: That all political parties or persons aspiring for political office sign up to reclaiming and restoring water bodies, farmlands and forests, upholding the "Polluter Pays" principle, and agree:
+ To a state of emergency in line with section 31 and 31 (4) of the 1992 constitution, in order to fight the environmental terrorists. Deployment of the Police and Military to remove all miners and mining equipment from our water bodies, forest reserves and farmlands.
+ Repeal L.I. 2462 and ensure that there is no mining or logging in forest reserves or globally significant biodiversity areas. Revoke all licences that have been granted to mine in forest reserves.
+ Pause Small Scale/Community Mining and stop issuing licences.
+ Cause environmental terrorists and all persons named in Prof. Frimpong Boateng's report to be investigated.
These demands are supported by other environmental and trade bodies.
