Environmentalists and other key stakeholders have always doubted the Community Mining Programme (CMP) which was launched by government some two years ago, as they see it as another form of illegal mining which has been legitimize. Thus, the CMP was supposed to be regulated, responsible and sustainable but everything points to the fact that, their activities are not being regulated, leaving footprints of destroyed lands, farms and water bodies in the process. One of the victims of such destruction being perpetuated under the CMP is Amaadaa, a farming community in the Atwima Mponua district of Ashanti Region where unclaimed mining pits are claiming lives of innocent people. According to the aggrieved residents, operators of the Amaadaa Community Mining have refused to reclaim the destroyed land, despite pleas from the opinion leaders of the community to do so. The Unit Committee Chairman of Amaadaa, Kwabena Asiedu, told ghenvironment.org in an interview that, the mining pits have spread across the community’s school compound which is posing danger to the lives of students. “We were told that, the CMP would stop the old practice of mining in water bodies and destruction of farm lands but it is not the case here as our farmlands are being destroyed, as well as our water bodies which is affecting our livelihood”, he said. He warned that, members of the community would not allow the wanton destruction to continue and are ready to take the law in their own hands and prevent the miners from operating. Meanwhile, ghenvironment.org has been informed that, the Police at Nnyinahin have summoned management of the mining company and opinion leaders of the Amaadaa community to a meeting on Thursday to settle the matter.
