When the decision was made by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the giant waste management company, to fumigate market centres and other public places in order to prevent the spread of the outbreak of Covid-19 somewhere in March 2020, many were those who mocked the exercise. Some critics on social media for instance claimed that the chemicals used for the activity are only effective to ward off rodents but not to prevent Covid-19. But, time they say, is the best judge as some Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have commended the fumigation exercise for helping to curtail the spread of the virus in their various localities. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Ghana, the government in collaboration with Zoomlion have conducted massive nationwide disinfection exercise which was aimed at reducing the rate of spread of the virus at the various public facilities. Some of the facilities that have so far benefited from the disinfection exercise include the Airports in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale, schools, markets, government institutions, hospitals, and courts among others. Speaking to journalists in Bolgatanga at the launch of the third phase of the market disinfection exercise in the Upper East Region recently, the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Joseph Amiyurre Atura, indicated that the disinfection of markets and other public spaces in the municipality has helped in the fight against the deadly virus. “The government’s disinfection exercises are doing a lot of good for market women in Bolga, particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic,” he added. Speaking in an interview with ghenvironment.org, the Public Relations Officer of Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, Dennis Adu Gyasi, said, it is good to disinfects open places to disable the virus because the Chemical used for the disinfection is known to be potent in killing the virus.
