The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mrs. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye is hot, following the threat by aggrieved Central Regional Fishermen to demonstrate over lack of outboard motors, even though they have fully paid for them. The aggrieved fishermen who are natives of Briwa in the Mfanteman Municipality of the Central Region have therefore given the Minister a one-week ultimatum to get them the motors of face their wrath. According to them, it is only members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Briwa who are having access to the outboard motors and are selling them to only NPP delegates, even though those people are not fishermen. Speaking on behalf of the fishermen, the Central Regional Canoe Fishermen Council Coordinator, Nana Patrick Mensah, expressed worry over the situation, which he said is affecting fishermen in the central region. The support which was funded under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP), was offered through a collaborative effort of the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD) and was intended to alleviate the plight of fishers and empower them in their business for national development. Under the intervention, a 40-horsepower outboard motor with a market price of GHC 19,000 was offered to the fishers at GHC 10,100 representing a subsidy of 47.3%. Similarly, a 15 horsepower which costs GHC14,500 was offered at GHC5,100 representing a subsidy of 65%. But, according to the aggrieved fishermen, the distribution of the outboard motors had been politicized, with only members of the NPP enjoying them while the real fishermen are made to suffer. According to Nana Mensah, about 568 fishermen in the area have been affected, even though they have fully paid for the outboard motors and are waiting for delivery. “We the fishermen in the Central Region have therefore given the sector minister, Mrs Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, one-week ultimatum to give out the outboard motors to our people, else we will organise a massive demonstration and march to the Fishing Ministry to demand for the outboard motors”, one of the fishermen said.
