The Ghana Industrial Trawlers Association (GITA) has begun vaccination for seafarers at the Tema Fishing Harbour as a means to mitigate the spread of coronavirus in the fishing industry. The exercise which is in collaboration with the National Fisheries Association of Ghana (NAFAG) and the Ghana Health Service is targeting to administer about 2,000 AstraZenega doses to seafarers within a week. In an interview with the Acting President of GITA, Peter Stephen Adjokatcher, he said, it is the responsibility of the Association to ensure that all seafarers were protected and in good health before departing to the sea for fishing. “As industry we also think about the welfare of our seafarers and all those in the industry who work hand in hand with our members and with the help of the fisheries commission and the Ministry of Health, we are now able to vaccinate all our members”, he said. He said the vaccines were provided at the doorstep of the seafarers as a strategy to get all of them vaccinated within a time frame without any difficulty. He urged all members to avail themselves for vaccination as Covid-19 is real and members need to stay strong and safe to serve their customers. Mr Adjokatcher also made a passionate appeal to government to subsidize marine gas oil to help survive the trawling vessels.
