220 acres of Achimota Forest to be parcelled out for development- Eco-Conscious Citizens

The Achimota Forest
Known as the lungs of Accra, the grabbing of the Achimota forest land was made possible by E.I. 144, amended by E.I. 234 in 2022.
Despite public protests, there is a concerted effort to transfer this national asset into private hands.
“We cannot purport to Green Ghana when the cameras are on, and then proceed to remove hectares of forest from Achimota Forest reserve, the last remaining Forest Reserve in Accra”, a statement by the Eco-Conscious Citizens said.
The statement noted that, at a time when Ghanaians are complaining about the adverse effects of climate change due to the diminishing tree cover in Accra, what is needed is more green spaces, not less.
“We are therefore calling on all concerned citizens of Ghana, friends of Ghana, and environmentalists everywhere, to send a clear signal that this unnecessary hiving off parts of Achimota Forest will not happen”.
“The relevant authorities have allowed our forests to be destroyed by illegal miners, and instead of protecting the remaining forests, they are about to carve it out for private development”.
“We cannot afford to be spectators. All concerned citizens must resist this. Additionally, Eco-Conscious Citizens' current SaveOurParksAndGardensPetition to be sent next month will ask the President to set up a Public Enquiry into how Parks and Gardens lands across Ghana have fallen into private hands, including those purported to have been leased by Lands Commission, and are not being used for Horticultural Purposes”, the statement added.

No justification whatsoever. This government is leaving a terrible legacy in more ways than one. Galamsey , state capture, no regard for Ghana, its land and environment. We have had the worst environmental destruction under the current regime. What is wrong with our so called leaders???? This is so tragic 😢. We are calling for the L.I. 2462 and E. I. 144 to be repealed and revoked completely
The L.I. 2462 which was passed in November 2022, legally permits unlimited and unfettered mining in forest reserves like the Achimota Forest Reserve.
Not even the ecologically sensitive Globally Significant Biodiversity Areas have been spared. What's wrong with Ghanaian leaders and politicians?

It is a very sad state of affairs. Accra is so hot as it is. We need the forest to be left alone, not more concrete. Why can’t other parts of Ghana be developed? Why concentrate all development in Accra? This is very shortsighted. I’m appealing to Government to take a second look at this situation and leave Achimota Forest alone.

We live in times where the greed of the ruling class, enabled by the power that the current constitution offers the executive, supported by the ignorance or apathy or helplessness at best, of the citizens - has brought us to a place where our very existence is under threat. When access to water is gone, when clean air is gone, when the species that gurantee the circle of life are gone - so are we! Our only recourse is to ‘make noise’ so that we can literally remain alive.

I know that as the population grows, there is a need for more housing, but we must be able to do so not to the detriment of our green land. We can not go all concrete without any green spaces carved ut for our benefit. That is a space for our mental, spiritual and physical stimulation. There is always a balance, it may not always be easy but if the right people are brought together at the table something to the benefit of all parties can be worked out. It is vital that we do bot continue to just lose our green spaces and destroy what God has blessed us with.
