President Akufo-Addo under Executive Instrument 144 has lifted the 1927 classification of the Achimota Forest in the Greater Accra Region as a Forest Reserve, paving way for its redesignation, reclassification, sale and development by other interests. The Executive Instrument was gazetted on behalf of President Akufo-Addo on 19th April, 2022 and came into effect on 1st May 2022. Per this Executive Instrument, a fourth of the original size of the gazetted forest has been chipped away. The forest covers an area of 495 ha. The purpose of reserving the piece of land to the south and east of the then Achimota College and Achimota School was to provide a screen and greenbelt between the forest and the educational institutions in Achimota and Accra. The Achimota Forest Reserve (hereinafter called urban forest) remains the only existing urban forest in Accra sandwiched by Achimota School to the West, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) to the East, Christian Village to the North and the George Walker Bush Motorway to the South. The forest serves as a park for animal species, a zoo for monkeys, a place for relaxation, and above all the lungs of the city (Okyerefo, 2009).
