An environmentalist and a campaigner against bauxite mining in the Atewa forest reserve, Mr Seth Oteng Adjei has joined his ancestors and will go ‘Home’ tomorrow March 25, 2023. The late Oteng Adjei until his demise on Wednesday, December 23, 2022, was the Assembly member for Kwabeng in the Eastern Region and President of the Concerned Citizens of Atewa Landscape (CCAL). His death came as a shock to many people as on Tuesday, December 22, 2022, he was at Radio I FM Station at Bunso Junction where he contributed to producing a remarkable voice-over recording on sustainable natural resources to be broadcasted in local communities around Atewa Forest. As a strong advocate against the proposed mining of bauxite in the Atewa forest reserve, the late Oteng Adjei organized several fora, press conferences, and other educational campaigns to drum home his message of no bauxite mining in the Atewa forest which is described as a biodiversity hub and critical watershed providing water to about 5 million people. He has been described by his peers as a towering and unwavering champion for environmental justice, an environmental mouthpiece, and an inspirational figure who did not just talk about environmental justice but dedicated his whole life to doing it. Vice President of the CCAL, Mr Emmaneul Tabi in his tribute said “Today we mourn the loss of our dear big brother with great disappointment and grief. Little did we know that you are going to depart from us soon. A vacuum has been created in the CCAL fraternity, which will be difficult to fill. But we know in our hearts that you have departed to a better land where pains, disappointments, and tears are no more”. Per the funeral arrangement, the late Oteng Adjei will be laid in state on 25th March 2023 at Kwabeng Town Park to be followed by the burial service at the Trinity Congregation Kwabeng and will be interred at PCG-Cemetery, Kwabeng.
