Workers of the Owabi Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region have been arrested by the police after they demolished a fence wall belonging to the son of the Ohwim Chief. The Bohyen Police went to their office to arrest them, but could not, and later the workers, led by their Manager, handed themselves to the police after the Ohwim Chief, Nana Kusi Baaye lodged a complaint at the police station. The Owabi Wildlife Division Manager, Madam Patience Apassnaba told the media that, the wall was constructed some meters into the buffer zone that protects the Owabi dam and also the animals in the forest reserve. She said they had earlier cautioned the Chief who was leading the fence wall construction on behalf of his son to stop the work about three years ago. The wall, she said, about three months ago was constructed despite the caution to the Chief that it encroaches the buffer zone that protects the dam which supplies water to the region. Madam Apassnaba said the Chief was invited for discussion about the fence wall which had encroached on the buffer zone, but declined to honor the invitation. However, she said, they demolished the wall as part of their mandate to protect the buffer zone, leading to the arrest. The Police have confirmed that the case is still under investigation.
