Residents of Buasu Kwame Pinsang Electoral Area and other adjoining communities in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region have been compelled to share the contaminated river sources in the area with animals due to the lack of access to potable water. The Assembly Member for the area, Emmanuel Dekyi disclosed in an interview with Sunyani fm that, the community and its adjourning villages have seen an increase in water-related diseases over the past years, resulting in the death of some residents, majority being children. He therefore expressed fear that, the situation could escalate as residents continue to fetch and use untreated water which they share with cattle and other animals from contaminated river sources in the area. Some of the affected villages he also mentioned are Kannease No1., Kannease, Gambia, Atakorakurom, Osei Kurom, Dan Nyame, Nyamebekyere and Pretua.
The polluted water
According to him, the Municipal Assembly started construction of boreholes in some of the villages but work had stopped. The Assembly member has therefore appealed to government, NGOs, and other Philanthropists to come to the aid of the affected communities and provide with them portable water which will go a long way to enhance the health condition of residents living in the area.
